In advance of his first Outwith Festival appearance, delivering a sitcom writing workshop at Cafe Wynd on Wednesday 6 September, we met up with TV writer Steve Lawrence . Steve has experience in comics, radio, television, film and interactive storytelling. He’s been part of the BBC Comedy Room, the first BBC Writersroom Scottish Voices group and BAFTA Connect. Sitcom is Steve’s great passion and he is delighted to be bringing top tips for killer comedy to this unique masterclass for Outwith. We asked him exactly what the the situation comedy means to him:
*
What attracts you to the sitcom format as a writer?
People are funny, 22-30 minutes is a great length to tell a really succinct story about the human experience.
*
What is your all time favourite sitcom?
There’s so many I love but I’d have to say Arrested Development. Those first 3 seasons are comedy perfection.
*
Who does it better when it comes to sitcoms – US or UK?
I’ve got favourites from both sides of the pond, what I will say is that I think that certain UK shows could benefit from the US writersroom model.
*
If your life was a sitcom, what would it be called?
