There are many occasions when the latest hipster bar or restaurant is not what you need. The special celebrations that punctuate people’s lives, such as engagements, christenings or anniversaries, or even just a family get together -when grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles and children are invited – would be an acoustic disaster in the hard surfaces of industrial chic. Carpet, curtains and comfort are what’s required. Not to mention space, upholstered dining chairs instead of benches, white table linen, and, just generally, a less frenetic environment. Garvock House Hotel in Dunfermline ticks all of these boxes. Interestingly, the Scottish Portuguese combination in the ownership is reflected in the staff and could be why the service is very good. A family owned hotel and restaurant since 1996, this Victorian building with traditional decor serves good quality food at reasonable prices; a three course lunch or supper is £20 and there’s an a la carte dinner menu.
