In Glasgow there’s a women-only whisky club. It was started by 29 year-old Geraldine Murphy after the Murphy family took over the Pot Still Bar three years ago. The traditional pub in Hope Street tends to have a male clientele and the assistant manager wanted women to be able to come in to the bar and feel happy asking staff about one of the largest selection of whiskies in Scotland.
At the first meeting Rachel Barrie, the master blender from Auchentoshan distillery came to speak to the group and since then there have been trips to whisky distilleries and festivals.
Perceived to be more of a ‘man’s drink’, Diageo say that, in fact a third of whisky drinkers are women. Their Johnnie Walker campaign enlisted Christina Hendricks because they thought women would be drawn by the idea of drinking whisky as making a sexy statement, presumably to help them attract men.
Sounds like the Whisky Girls Club have taken a better tack; women might actually like the drink on its own merits.
