Alber Elbaz, the celebrated Casablanca-born creative director at Lanvin says, ‘I love wrinkles. I love grey hair’. His new fall/winter campaign features non models of varied body shapes and personalities who range in age from 18 to 82. All were cast after being spotted on the streets of New York city and were photographed by Steven Meisel. The campaign is undoubtedly very smart and it’s great to see a more inclusive take on what is striking and appealing. However it’s interesting that one’s eye does go straight to the face rather than the clothes. Unlike blank-faced identikit professional models, you can’t help but wonder who the person is and what their story has been.
Thanks for this, great to see interesting looking people for a change! however, I wonder if your eyes go straight to the face and not the clothes because you have been told these are ‘real’ people?
good point – possibly. The room sets are fantastically well styled too aren’t they? Perhaps more conventional, younger models would have looked out of place in these sets…
