Would you consider signing up for a foodies walking tour of your home town? Alan Chalmers, after seeing foodie walking tours in cities in Canada and America, decided to start one in Edinburgh, and more recently, in St Andrews. It’s true that most of his customers are tourists, ranging from high end visitors to backpackers, who save up the £49 for the food tour as the main treat during their visit. Nevertheless, the pitstops are places frequented by locals and, in St Andrews, the 4 or 5 stop tour includes St Andrews BrewPub, The Guid Cheese Shop, Luvians Bottle Shop, Forgans and Janetta’s, the town’s well-known ice-cream shop.
Places covered in the Edinburgh itinery can include Hotel du Vin, the Crafters Barn on the Mound, Demijohn in Victoria Street, Calistoga, the Scotch Malt Whisky Society and Ghillie-Dhu.
Worth being a tourist for the afternoon? You might see your town in a different light.
