Inspired by similar night markets from around the world two local girls Jamie Craig-Gentles and Liana Nickel started the Night Market in 2014 at Balgove Larder near St Andrews. Wednesday 24 September was the last of the summer markets but we’ll keep you posted as soon as the next one is in the diary. Stalls include Dunfermline chocolatier, Gill and Stan Lyth of Hello Chocolate.
The ever popular Fife Coastal Path has a number of great pit stops along the way. In March 2013 another cafe joined the route when Lis McTaggart gave up language teaching at Woodmill High School and opened McTaggart’s in Aberdour. Taking her inspiration from Delivino in Crieff, Perthshire, Lis commissioned Burns Design, who also design Tom Kitchin’s places, to create the interior. The menu includes salads, breakfast, panninis as well
Jock Sharp has slept for just four hours in the last two days. We caught up with the joiner turned baker on Sunday at the Walled Garden near Kincardine and heard how the wonderful real breads he and his wife Fiona make at their bakery in Crossgates have found such an enthusiastic audience among the bread connoisseurs of Fife that the pair have to work flat out to keep up
by The Grumbling Tummy Grab your diary and save the date because here are the 2014 dates for all these fantastic foodie events going on this summer and beyond. Again this year I apologies to my friends south of the border – there is just too much going on down there to list. I hope that you might be tempted to pack your weekend bag and take a trip to try out the
‘It’s like Cornwall 50 years ago’ is something James Robb, founder of the East Pier Smokehouse & Cafe at St Monans, often hears visitors say about the uncrowded East Neuk. The re-opening of this Fife restaurant means that the pretty harbour is now bookended by two high quality eating places with Craig Miller’s seafood restaurant at the other end. If you are walking the popular Fife Coastal path, the East Pier
Handy for both Fife & Edinburgh, the dog-friendly Cramond Falls Cafe is five miles from the centre of capital and about 10 miles south of Dunfermline. Owner, Elaine Stuart has made sure there’s a welcome all year round – there’s lots of outdoor seating by the scenic River Almond for the warm weather and log burning stoves inside for the winter walkers. After seven years building up the custom at the Cramond
Like many beach side sites seasonality has proved a problem for cafes in Aberdour over the years. That was until Nova and Ervin Gamble took over Sands Cafe two years ago. Now the Bistro at Silver Sands is open all year round. In winter the cafe is still busy with walkers on the popular Fife Coastal Path and since a travel site highly rated the cafe’s disabled access the location
Mary, of Mary’s Milk Bar in the Grassmarket, Edinburgh, graduated from ice-cream university. Naturally, Italy tops the University league tables when it comes to making ice-cream and Mary Hillard, originally from Yorkshire, studied at the prestigious Carpigiani Gelato University in Bologna. However, childhood visits to milk bars in Scarborough and Whitby – both of which are still open today – provided the inspiration for the Edinburgh store. Mary has introduced
Just when you thought it was impossible to improve on Tunnock’s teacakes along comes these bad boys. Space teacakes are from Zukr Boutique, who also produce an enticing range of marshmallows including the whisky and orange confection (pictured below). Harvey Nichols ex-pastry chef David and designer/photographer wife, Maggie whip up these ‘edible clouds of joy’ from their premises in the Pentland Hills. Luckily the space teacakes will be coming in
Ricky de Marco is a regular at the Sundial Cafe in Limekilns, Fife. The Edinburgh art impresario is not the only fan; locals in the scenic waterfront village keep coming back for the homebaking. Mike (pictured below) and Sandra Graham opened the cafe in September 2012 after careful restoration of the 400 year-old building. Clearly a labour of love, the restoration has revealed the beautiful stonework, complementing the dark slate
