Here is a fascinating opportunity to look at a work in progress by one the most talented artists working in Dunfermline. Olga Krasanova is originally from Siberia but has become fascinated by the ample heritage and varied architecture of her new hometown and is inspired in particular by the actual wall and brick patterns of Dunfermline. The Central St Martins graduate says, ‘It might strike as an odd idea but I’ve been living in three countries and in over five towns and have travelled but still I find the architecture of Dunfermline interesting because of its history, the history you can see in all these small details like marks and cuts on stonework.’

Olga successfully applied to Fife Contemporary Art & Craft for a project in which she is creating windsocks from specially created fabric bearing these patterns and marks. The idea is to suggest the way in which even the most permanent structures are subject to the winds of change. Olga explains, ‘Even though the stone is a solid material and houses can stand for centuries, the social human impact makes changes to the environment. For example Abbot House used to be an actual abbot house then eventually became a museum, Fire Station Creative used to be a fire station and now it’s a gallery.’

Olga’s architecture-inspired windsocks will fly for the first time at this year’s Fresh Air Festival on 28 May before appearing again at Blueprint Dunfermline, an exciting new event happening in September – more details to follow!
