At over eight acres Gordon Castle’s walled garden in Fochabers, near Elgin, is one of the largest and oldest walled gardens in Scotland. Owners Angus Gordon Lennox and his wife Zara have commissioned award-winning garden designer, Arne Maynard to recapture the former beauty of the garden and create a major visitor attraction in the north east of Scotland.

The plans, pictured above, certainly show an elegant and handsome garden for tourists and visitors, but the garden also needs to work hard to produce the estate’s food, drink and beauty products. Already the Gordon Castle Gin is attracting plaudits; a gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, a silver at the World Gin Awards, and stints as the featured gin of the month at Harrods and Fortnum & Mason.

Set on the banks of the River Spey, the Estate’s café is popular with locals and visitors. Both the cafe and shop use fresh produce from the garden with the shop selling fresh fruit, vegetables,  jams, chutney and cider.  A range of bath and beauty products with ingredients sourced from the garden was also launched recently.

Angus and Zara want to ensure that Gordon Castle is sustainable for future generations and their astute spread betting on quality in all the Estate’s resources – accommodation, salmon fishing, venue hire, events, studios for artists, the cafe, the walled garden, not to mention the gin,  is helping to do just that.
