The charms of Scottish men proved irresistible for two Canadian sisters and explains why ‘Georgia Rose‘, a furniture upcycling company happens to be based in Dunfermline, Fife instead of Prince Edward Island, Canada.
Two days after missing her flight back to Canada, Natasha Gallant Marr, who had been visiting her sister Carrie in Edinburgh, was in Wester Hailes when she met Charlie, her future husband. Several years have passed since then and now both sisters live with their Scottish husbands and families in Dunfermline, Fife. At the end of last year, their parents, keen to spend more time with their grandchildren, also moved from Canada to join them in the Fife town.
Natasha, who also works in Dunfermline restaurant Gratzi, had been transforming pieces of furniture for a few years before she launched her business in August 2013 – Georgia Rose is named after Natasha and Carrie’s daughters.
‘I love to find unique and beautiful pieces of furniture and furnishings. Sometimes they need a little restoration sometimes they are beautiful already. The best quality paint for furniture is from Annie Sloan but I’m happy to work with other colour ranges and I take commissions – one client had two identical mahogany sideboards so she could afford to be adventurous with one of them, painting the piece a dark, inky blue’. Prices, which include the cost of the furniture unless it is a commission, range from £15 for a small table to around a £100/£150 for a chest of drawers or desk.
